The Cauldron

The food will only cook with a steady flame.

I want to start this Substack by exploring a fascinating Daoist principle: the Cauldron. It symbolizes a powerful process of transformation that can inspire us in unexpected ways.

The three principles of mind, body, and breath are represented in the cauldron, and for an alchemical process to occur, a steady flame must be present.

The cauldron can be seen as an analogy for building habits to allow for true transformation to occur.

Imagine you’re cooking a delicious broth. If you keep blasting the heat for a few minutes then turn it off for days, and then repeating this cycle, the broth will never fully come together.

Rather, to create the most delicious, nourishing broth, it is best to simmer the vegetables and possibly bones on a low heat for a long period of time. This slow, steady process creates something special—something rich, deep, and full of flavor.

Over time, the water gradually turns into steam. In Daoist philosophy, this transformation represents how steady, consistent effort fosters profound change.

This is how I like to think about habits. It is better to do something every day for even five minutes than to do it inconsistently and with greater effort on those sporadic days.

When you practice a habit daily, it becomes a part of you rather than just something you do. There is no separation.

Take my mornings, for instance: I stretch every day, no matter what, even if it’s just for one minute. On some mornings, if time permits, I’ll stretch a little longer. But that single minute each day teaches my body that it can trust these movements, allowing it to open up a little faster and deeper over time. Repetition allows my brain to shut off and just flow with the process through movement and breath.

So, my friends, take a moment to reflect on the Daoist principle of the cauldron. Could it serve as a guiding symbol in your daily rituals or even as you prepare your next meal?

I’ll return soon to share one of my favorite daily recipes that has turned into a habit, allowing me to flourish throughout the day.

Until then, just be.

🙂

Gratefully,

Justine
